Everything You Need to Know Before You Hit the Road.

What is the minimum age to enroll in a driving school in NJ?

You must be at least 16 years old to begin behind-the-wheel training with a state licensed driving school

Do I need a permit before taking driving lessons?

Yes. You need a valid examination permit (student or adult) issued by the NJ Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) before formal lessons can begin.

Once you sign up with Seville Driving School, we will take care of obtaining your permit and performing the eye examination in office if necessary.

What is the GDL (Graduated Driver License) program?

In NJ, the GDL is a multi-stage mandatory licensing system for all first-time drivers (regardless of age) to gain experience under lower-risk conditions. 

It requires passing vision, knowledge, and road tests, with restrictions on passenger number and driving hours.

Does Seville offer defensive driving courses?

Yes, Seville offers defensive driving or point reduction courses that can also help lower insurance rates

How many hours of behind-the-wheel training are required?

New Jersey requires 6 hours of professional behind-the-wheel instruction for 16-year-olds to get a validated permit.

Can adults (17 or older) take lessons at driving schools?

Yes. Adults can enroll in driving lessons for skill improvement or road test preparation.

What are the stages for the GDL?
 

1. Special Learner Permit (must be at least 16 years old) must enroll in approved behind-the-wheel training, pass tests, and have parental consent. Must drive with a supervising adult (21+, 3+ years experience).

 

2. Probationary License (Age 17) Must have driven at least 6 months with a permit without suspensions and pass the road test.

3. Basic License (Age 18) Obtained after 1 year of unsupervised driving with a probationary license.

What do I need for the road test?

    •    A valid permit

    •    6 Points of ID

    •    A registered and insured vehicle (with a valid inspection sticker) with middle brake

    •    The red probationary decal affixed to license plate

    •    A licensed driver accompanying you
