The NJ Graduated Driver License (GDL) program is the mandatory process for first time teen drivers to obtain their driver’s permit and then their unrestricted basic driver’s license. The GDL program is designed to provide education and on the road driving experience to increase driver safety. The program has been shown to reduce driving fatalities among teens and their passengers. For more information, please download and read this guide.
There Are Two Main Stages to the GDL Program
1. Permit Stage:
- Be at least 16 years old
- Enrollment in an approved behind-the-wheel driver training course
- Pass the vision and written test
- Note: If the student is 17 years old, they will need to practice supervised driving for a minimum of a six- month period before moving to the license stage
2. License Stage:
- Probationary License Requirements
- Be at least 17 years old
- Pass the motor vehicle commission road test
- Practice unsupervised driving for a minimum of 12 months
- Basic Driver’s License Requirements
- Be at least 18 years old
- Complete the 12 month unsupervised driving minimum
Benefits of Enrolling in the Seville Driving School GDL Program
- Vision Tests: We conduct vision tests in our office, no need to go to an outside facility
- Basic orientation: Provided for parents and teens followed by a three-hour evening course to help educate the student about the written test and set them up for success
- On Road Training: Six hours of behind-the-wheel training with our dual-controlled cars (door-to-door pickup)
- Road Test Practice Session: Available to all our students, this optional course provides a pre-test refresher with our drivers the day of the test plus the use of our vehicles for the test itself
- Experienced and Safe Driving Experience: Our instructors are state licensed, non-smokers with more than 15 years of driving experience. All our instructors pass a comprehensive background check
